as head of the catholic church, a decision that's leading many to ask what's next? good afternoon, i'm pat lawson muse. >> and i'm jim handly. first up tonight, things are very quiet at the vatican where church leaders were earlier shocked by the bombshell today. the pope says he lacks the strength to complete his duties. he's the first pontiff to willingly step down in over 700 years. claudio lavag in the a has more from rome. >> reporter: the say is once the pope dies, you make a new one, which means most people don't expect a pope to and date. >> well, i don't know what more to say.

for the 1.2 billion catholics around the world, then he should step down. it's something that nobody has considered in modern times. >> a pope today has to conduct, you know, hundreds if not thousands of audiences, meetings, encounters every year. it takes a tremendous physical toll. >> reporter: pope benedict xiv has just said i had enough of this. he's also been kind of a low-key person, who just wanted to retire into a spiritual life. that's exactly what he will do now. he will retire to spiritual life into a monastery in the vatican for the rest of his life, while somebody else will take his place. president obama reacted with this statement today. he said -- on behalf of americans everywhere, michelle and i wish to extend our precious and prayers to his holyness pope benedict xiv. michelle and i warmly remember

our meeting with the holy father in 2009 and i've appreciated our work together over the last four years. the church plays a critical role in the united states and the world, an i wish the best to those who will soon gather to his pope benedict xiv's successor. d.c.'s catholic community is also reacting to the surprising announcement. news4's tony tull talked with the archbishop of washington and church-goers about the pope's decision to step down. >> pope benedict xiv to resign. not that long ago i was in rome and the holy father made no indication at all. >> though the cardinal would not specifically comment on who may

however as nbc reports, heavy rain today hampered the cleanup effort. >> area views sunday confirmed it stayed on the ground for some 75 miles, which officials say actually gave people in its path plenty of time to seek safety. >> i tell anybody when you hear the sirens, you know it's for real. >> reporter: the half-hour warning kept serious casualties to a minimum. >> when a tornado is bearing down, it gives you the opportunity to respond, to get to a place of safety within your home. >> reporter: of more than 80 people hurt, only two were critically injured. hattiesburg was especially hard hit by the twister, caught on camera tearing through downtown shortly before sunset sunday when it wasn't very crowded because most businesses were closed. still, dozens of buildings were left mangled, including offices

investigators are trying to figure out why a gunman opened fire inside a deck aware courthouse. police say he walked into the building and xwe again shooting. officers returned fired. two women died in the exchange, and the gunman is also dead. police tell us two officers also were injured, but their injuries are not considered seniors. at this hour police are not confirming any details about the suspect or his relationship to the victims. gabby giffords has a new tv commercial out. it's aimed at curbing recent gun violent. >> tack it from me, congress must act. let's get this done. >> americans for response solutions is behind the 30-second ad. that's the group giffords founded with her husband, retired astronaut mark kelly. as you know she was shot in the head two years ago.

the sky out. shrouded in fog this morning, um-hmm. now we're starting to see some clearing skies. let's go strakt to the maps. we'll look at your evening planner. mostly cloud use sighs, so i think we'll see more clearing taking place. it will be cool, temperature at 9:00 p.m., 47 degrees, then it's clear and school by 11:00 p.m. as we drop from the current 54 to 46 degrees by 11:00 p.m. on the radar, at least, we don't have any rain at all. storm team 4 radar, we're dry across the area. i think the next precipitation will start showing up on wednesday. right now it looks like probably during the late morning we could start to see precipitation, so late clearing for us, wince out of the northwest, we'll have a partly sunny to mostly sunny skies. i think temperatures will be comparable to today. lies from the low to mid 50s. the next system will start organizing, area of low pressure

that will start to dig across the south, around atlanta by the time we get to early wednesday morning, watch this area of low pressure make its way northeastward toward our area early on wednesday, so again we're still dry, then that area of low pressure comes up, starting as rain, i think in most locations, but then with colder air coming in, it's snow for us, with some accumulation possible for the wednesday evening rush and wednesday night. right now here's the way it's looking. the best chance of accumulation is there will be some chance that we'll see accumulation, areas around fredericksburg, but the best chance will be north and to the west of d.c., for gaithersburg, for areas around columbia, maryland, around sterling, best chance of accumulation right in here for the wednesday evening and wednesday early night. here's a look at your goodnight/wake-up forecast, upper 30s by tomorrow morning.

a 14-year-old boy has been charged with murder, accused of killing his baby sister. police say the boy admitted beating his 7 moral inside their white oak apartment friday night. they say the mother left him in charge of the child while she worked as overnight shift. he also told police he covered the baby's mouth and nose when she started to cry. at this time right now the boy is charged as an adult. news4's pat collins will have

this is what it looked like when a tornado tore through hattiesburg, mississippi last night. the twister destroyed hundreds of homes and cars, knocked down trees, left a trail of debris. 60 people were hurt, but luckily no one was killed. getting off to a cold start again tonight with more wind. >> veronica has the latest. well, we're going to be dropping down into the 30s tonight. we stand at 54 degrees right now. we have overcast skies, but we are seeing some clearing. you can see the wind is picking up, too out of the southwest at 13 miles per hour right now. so a bit of a breeze even throughout the day. we're at 52 in gaithersburg, 53 over in buoys, mid to upper 50s just to the south and west, down toward warrenton, so for your city planner forecast, 50 degrees by 5:00 p.m., 48 by 7:00, cool conditions will drop to 46, a starry sky for us tonight, and then mild

a former soldier who refused to accept defeat received the medal of honor today. president obama placed the medal on clinton romeshe. 50 american troops were ambus d ambushed. they were surrounded on all sides by -- who held the high ground. he was injured by a rocket-propelled grenade, but led the charge through the day-long fire fight and led the team through enemy fire to rescue several fallen soldiers. >> in clint lives the soldier's creed, i will never leave a fallen comrade. he and his team started charging, and they kept

charging, 50 meters, 80 meters, ultimately 100-meter run through a hail of bullets. they reached their fallen friends, and they brought them home. >> eight americans were killed that day. their families were at today's ceremony. staff sergeant romeshe grew up in california. he's retired from the military now and works in the oil fields of north dakota. ♪ several thousand people attended this public memorial service today for former navy s.e.a.l. chris kyle. it was held at cowboys stadium outside dallas. he was shot to death, you'll remember, at a texas shooting range earlier this month. before and during the service, pictures were thrown on the large screen. he was considered to be the deadliest sniper in american military history. he wrote the best-selling book "american sniper" he and his

a $1 million award generating several new tips today. but the former l.a. police officers and now accused killer is still on the run tonight. the department has also increased security around the families of the officers. dorner is allegedly targeting. as miguel almaguer reports, so far the only concrete sightings of the suspect have been in surveillance videos. >> reporter: in surveillance video obtained by nbc news, law enforcement sources say christopher dorner dumps a gun belt, a helmet his police uniform and ammunition the morning after his first two murders. police also released these pictures of dorner taken in late january, another look at an

accused cop killer that remains out of sight. >> to be targeted because you took an oath to protect others, to have your family targeted because they're related to you, that is absolutely terrifying. >> with the former cop turned fugitive accused of murdering three, today we have learned more about the last victim, an officer with two young children, who survived two tours in iraq, but was ambushed while on patrol here at home. >> our brother is officer michael crain. he was 34 years old, an 11-year veteran of the riverside police department. >> reporter: detectives says in this ranting 20-page manifester, dorner outlines his plan to murder those involved in his case. in a stunning reversal from last week. >> it is not going to happen. >> reporter: the police chief now says he'll reopen dorner's personnel file. bill bratton led the force when

dorner was fired in 2008. >> you don't just fire somebody without significant evidence or information. >> reporter: on the run for five days, dorner's trail has gone cold. in the mountains three hours outside of los angeles where his broken-down truck was discovered, investigators now say they've recovered a cache of weapons and camping gear. back in los angeles, police beefed up their presence at the grammys fearful dorner would targets a large venue, though today there remains no sign of the suspect in his ways there is still widespread fear. >> officers are now protecting 50 families dorner has allegedly named in his manifesto. some of them are not leaving their homes unless absolutely necessary. pat? a deejay who lost his job for making a prank call is back on the radio. michael christian and mel gregg's show was canceled shortly after they called the hospital where kate middleton was staying, pretending to be

queen elizabeth and prince charles. now he's broadcasting on a sister station in melbourne. in the first show, he made no mention of the controversy, and didn't take any calls. gregg is still off the air. carnival says everybody is staying calm despied being stranded. the" triumph" has stuck since sunday. a fire in the engine room caused it to lose propulsion. none of the 4,000 people aboard was hurt. they have lost basic services like the use of toilets. the "triumph" left texas on thursday, a tugboat will tow it back to mexico. carnival will fly people back to the u.s. passengers will get a full refund and credit on a future cruise. some travel experts are weighing in on what another potential airline merger is going to mean for passengers. bankrupt american airlines and

us airways are in talk to join forces as early as this week. it would create the world's largest airline as far as passenger traffic. and it would be the fourth mega-airline merger in the past few years. on the flip side, experts say more mergers could also mean better service at the nation's larger airports. if we're looking for better weather, don't look to wednesday. >> wednesday is the first day. a storm that could bring accumulating snowfall, so for the wednesday evening rush and thursday morning rush, not out of the question we will see delays on area roads. let's talk about what's going on, though. the skies have been trying to clear. currently the temperature is 54.

and getting a little breezy. the fog we had not an issue overnight. this is a look at the lows. early morning temperatures, areas around fairfax, adams morgan, 35 to 37 degrees tomorrow morning, not all that bad. then i think we'll see the mercury rise to the low and mid 50s tomorrow. that's pretty much where we got today, but with more sunshine coming our way tomorrow. as far as that next weather system goes, it will be coming from the south. look at this. a tremendous amount of moisture down through the south, around areas of louisiana, just north and west of jacksonville, florida right now, so that next system organized, comes into the area, will start as rain for most, the possibility of some snow accumulation. temperatures at the beginning i think will be high enough that snow will fall, but a lot of it will start melting.

we could see temperatures drop low enough where conditions could get slick north and west of the area. that indeed is the best chance of seeing that snowfall. through montgomery county, loudoun county up north into frederick county, maryland for wednesday. as far as the forecast goes from 54 to 42, we'll couldle it down with the rain/snow mix. the high on thursday of 48 degrees. we're looking at breezy conditions. friday right now partly sunny, the high 47, then there's the potential of another system where temperatures could be lo enough. we could see more accumulating snowfall. that's the way it's looking right now. for wednesday, 70% chance during the afternoon of that rain changing over to snow. we will of course keep you updated. pat? squlim? we're in the midst of season 14 of "the biggest loser" and

the action is continuing to heat up. michael sydorie is from maryland. we caught up with his wife to told us how the college professor is finally starting to win his battle with the bulge. >> keep going. that's it, mike. >> he always says he's a comfort eater, so if anything happens, we always turn to food. >> when michael dorsey walked into "the biggest loser ranch" he weighed a whopping 444 pounds, making him the heaviest contender this season. his wife says all that weight was the result of eating too much and exercising too little. >> mike all for all this time, he's always tried different fads, different weight-loss programs to try. a lot of times he was successful, but true success is when you're able to keep it off. that was always the hard zest part for him. >> every single day this is what it's going to feel like until we get more and more of that weight off. >> after sweating it out, he's

lost 80 pounds so far this season. his wife says the new motivation came from the recent birth of their baby boy. >> once we had the baby last year, it was at that point where he basically said if i don't get this weight off, my son is not going to be able to grow up and have me as a father. >> she says she's proud of his progress and the changes he's made. he's changed the way he's eating. >> and he's going to the gym, even dragging his wife along with him. >> it's been exciting. i love to see the transformation in him. he -- it's a new person. he's a total new person. still the big same smile, still the personality, but he's much more confident. >> and you can catch michael dorsey on nbc's "biggest loser" tonight at 8:00. good for michael. he is getting it done. >> what a great and cute bundle of inspiration he has.
